NIC-2025 (National Industrial Classification 2025)

NIC-2025, or National Industrial Classification 2025, is India’s official MoSPI classification for coding economic activities by industry. It progressively replaces the older NIC-2008 framework across statistical and registration systems, aligns India’s activity codes with ISIC Rev. 5, and helps government portals identify what a business actually does.

Definition

NIC-2025 is a statistical standard issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for classifying establishments and enterprises by their principal economic activity. It does not create a business licence on its own; it provides the activity code used in surveys, registrations, and government databases that require sector classification.

Definition

Governing Provision

NIC-2025 is governed by MoSPI’s final National Industrial Classification 2025 publication and implemented through government systems that adopt it. MoSPI’s NIC finder lists both NIC 2025 and NIC 2008, while ASUSE 2026 records a shift from NIC 2008 to NIC 2025 for economic activity classification. Where a portal still asks for NIC-2008, the older code should be used until that portal migrates.

Key Features

NIC-2025 identifies the economic activity first and then assigns the appropriate industry code. The classification is useful for statistical reporting, survey coverage, Udyam-style activity descriptions, startup and incorporation data, and sector-level policy analysis, but the code must match the actual business activity rather than the trade name or object clause alone.

Key features of NIC-2025 include

  • Issued by MoSPI as India’s National Industrial Classification for 2025.
  • Aligned with the United Nations ISIC Rev. 5 framework.
  • Used to classify economic activities, not legal entity types.
  • Supports activity coding for statistical surveys and government databases.
  • Includes concordance material for mapping NIC-2025 with NIC-2008.
  • Works alongside, not in place of, tax codes such as HSN or SAC.

FAQ’s

Is NIC-2025 a business registration?

No. NIC-2025 is a classification standard, not a business registration certificate or licence. A business may still require incorporation, Udyam Registration, GST Registration, local trade licences, or sector-specific approvals depending on its business activities. NIC-2025 is used only to classify and report the nature of an economic activity through a standardised code.

Is NIC-2025 the same as NIC-2008?

No. NIC-2025 is the latest industrial classification issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and is aligned with ISIC Revision 5. NIC-2008 follows the earlier international classification framework. During the transition period, some government portals may still require NIC-2008, depending on the form or system being used.

Who issues NIC-2025 in India?

NIC-2025 is issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) through the National Statistical System. MoSPI also provides an official NIC code search tool for looking up activity descriptions under both NIC-2025 and NIC-2008.

Is NIC the same as HSN or SAC?

No. NIC classifies economic activities by industry, whereas HSN and SAC classify goods and services for GST purposes. For example, a software company may use an NIC code for industry classification while using separate SAC codes for GST invoicing of its services.
