Delhi CM Urges for a Faceless GST System, highlighting Pending Dues
On Saturday, Delhi’s newly elected Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, called for a more transparent and ‘faceless’ Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, highlighting the need to simplify tax collection and lower bureaucratic hurdles for businesses. Delhi CM while speaking at an event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, revealed that more than ₹80,000 crore in GST dues owed to Delhi government, still pending due to various disputes and administrative challenges.
While addressing a large gathering of Chartered Accountants, Delhi CM said, “Our aim should be to make the GST system entirely faceless. Taxes must be collected in a hassle-free and transparent manner.” In the same context, she also urged GST officers to stop and avoid summoning businesspersons to their offices if they are already facing the court proceedings related to their cases.
In her addressal, she also lauded the Chartered Accountant community for its significant role in addressing tax-related disputes and also contributing to the economic resilience of the Capital of the nation.
Stressing on the recent budget announcement, she said, “This was the first time a ₹1 lakh crore budget was presented while the government’s treasury was nearly empty. People asked who could present such a big budget in these conditions — I had faith in this community. I knew they would help the government meet its revenue goals remarked.”
The remarks come at a point when the Delhi Government is under immense pressure of simplifying and enhancing its tax administration, and also recovering substantial dues to ensure funding for the development projects.
In this ICAI event, several professionals and policy experts participated and broader issues surrounding taxation, fiscal discipline and economic policy were discussed.
