Rule 43A Amended; Total Authorised Drug Import Entry Points Rise to 42
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has notified Navi Mumbai Airport in Maharashtra as an authorised port of entry for the import of drugs under the Drugs Rules, 1945. The amendment to Rule 43A enables pharmaceutical consignments to be imported through the newly operational airport, further strengthening India’s pharmaceutical logistics infrastructure.
The notification was issued after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

Total Notified Entry Points Increase to 42
With this amendment, the total number of authorised ports of entry for drug imports – including airports, seaports, road checkpoints, and rail checkpoints – has increased to 42. The inclusion of Navi Mumbai Airport provides pharmaceutical importers with an additional strategic gateway, improving connectivity and offering greater flexibility across the movement of imported medicines.
Improved Logistics for Pharmaceutical Imports
The newly notified airport is expected to streamline the import of pharmaceutical consignments by easing logistics and reducing operational bottlenecks. It also strengthens India’s pharmaceutical supply chain by providing an alternative route for imports and enhancing cargo handling capacity in one of the country’s fastest-growing commercial regions.
Ease of Doing Business
The amendment forms part of the government’s broader initiative to modernise the regulatory framework governing pharmaceutical imports. By expanding the network of authorised import ports, the government aims to facilitate legitimate trade, improve the Ease of Doing Business, and strengthen the efficiency of India’s pharmaceutical logistics ecosystem while maintaining strict regulatory oversight.
The notification is highly significant for pharmaceutical importers, manufacturers, distributors, logistics providers, customs brokers, and other stakeholders engaged in cross-border trade.
Businesses intending to import drugs through Navi Mumbai Airport should ensure full compliance with the applicable provisions of the Drugs Rules, 1945, and other statutory requirements governing pharmaceutical imports into India.
