Udyam Registration Data to Strengthen Statistical Business Register: What Businesses Should Know

Overview: The Ministry of MSME and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) have exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate structured sharing of relevant Udyam Registration data for developing and strengthening India’s Statistical Business Register (SBR). The initiative is intended to improve the coverage, consistency and reliability of business information used for statistical purposes.

India’s formal business ecosystem is becoming increasingly data-driven. The Government has taken another step in that direction with the latest move to connect Udyam Registration data with the national statistical framework.

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 29th September, 2026, for sharing relevant information from the Udyam Registration ecosystem. The arrangement will support the development and strengthening of the Statistical Business Register (SBR) and the proposed National Statistical Business Register (NSBR).

What is the new Udyam data-sharing arrangement?

The Udyam Registration ecosystem’s unit-wise data will be shared with MoSPI through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). The arrangement also envisages a two-way API mechanism to support the preparation of the National Statistical Business Register (NSBR).

This structured framework is intended to improve the coverage, consistency and reliability of business information used for statistical purposes.

The Udyam Registration ecosystem has become a large formal business-registration platform. As per government data, more than 7.83 crore enterprises had registered on the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform between July 2020 and February 2026. The number includes registrations across both platforms.

What is a Statistical Business Register?

A Statistical Business Register (SBR) is a regularly updated database of statistical units engaged in economic activity within a defined geographical area.

According to a PIB release, it can cover businesses, enterprises, establishments and other relevant economic units, along with important characteristics and relationships between those units.

The SBR is an important foundation for economic statistics. It can help identify populations for economic surveys, support survey sample selection, produce business-demography statistics and improve consistency when information is drawn from different data sources.

Why does this matter for businesses?

The PIB release does not announce any new Udyam filing or compliance requirement for businesses. The MoU primarily establishes a framework for data sharing between the Ministry of MSME and MoSPI. However, it has a broader significance. As government systems become better connected, businesses have a stronger reason to keep their registration and statutory information accurate and up to date.

Businesses with Udyam Registration should ensure that their registration particulars are accurate and consistent with their current business information. Any changes in the enterprise, its activities or other relevant particulars should be reviewed to determine whether the Udyam record or other business records need to be updated.

This is particularly relevant for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), as Udyam Registration is an important part of the Government’s MSME formalisation framework.

What should MSMEs review?

Businesses can use this development as an opportunity to review their basic registration and statutory records, including:

  • Udyam Registration particulars and enterprise classification;
  • business and contact details maintained on relevant government portals;
  • consistency of information across Udyam, GST and other applicable registrations;
  • changes in business activities or structure that may require updates; and
  • supporting records maintained for statutory and regulatory purposes.
