Employee Provident Fund Organization is a social security organization that secures and manages social security schemes for employees in the Organized Sector. This organization is a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, which was established under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. This organization has taken a step into Digital Empowerment by introducing a new process of Universal Account Number (UAN) generation and activation by employees using Aadhaar Face Authentication Technology (FAT) using the UMANG Mobile App, which came into effect on 01st August 2025.

Old UAN Generation Process

Before this digitized step for UAN generation by employees introduced by EPFO, previously this was done by the Employers using data from the employees, for instance, the Father’s Name of the Employee, Date of Birth, Education, and Contact Details. After filling these data into the concerned portal, followed by approval by the employer, the UAN Number was generated and allotted to the employee. In this previous process of UAN generation, employees had to solely depend on the employers for UAN generation and their filled details accuracy.

Need for New UAN Generation Process through UMANG APP

In the previous UAN generation process by the employers, it was found by the EPF Organization that in the majority of UAN generations, some errors were very common regarding the Father’s Name of Employee, the Date of Birth of Employee, and in the Contact Details, etc. These errors often create problems and long-time pendency during the claiming process and or while accessing other EPFO services and related schemes. For the correction of the details, employees had to rely on their employers only. In many cases, UAN Numbers were not even intimated to the employees, and mobile numbers were missing or incorrect, making direct communication difficult.

In FY 2024-2025, there were 1.26 crore UANs allotted to the employees, and only 44.68 lakh, about 35.30% were activated by the members. On several reminders given to employers to get employees to activate their UAN by using Aadhaar OTP, so that in the future, any benefit under the Employment Linked Scheme could be potentially provided using DBT.

Benefits of UAN Generation through UMANG APP

  • 100% validation of Aadhaar.
  • All data of employees will be fetched directly from the Aadhaar Database.
  • UAN activation on the EPFO portal during the generation process.
  • UAN generation by the Employee directly, and the e-UAN card PDF can be downloaded by the Employee, removing any dependency on the Employer.
  • Access to EPFO services such as passbook viewing, KYC updates, claim submission, and more is immediately unlocked.

This new process of UAN generation is available for Indian Citizens except International Workers and Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.

Conclusion

This new process of UAN generation will lead to and enhance the skills of a large number of people towards the Digital Environment. Generating a UAN through the UMANG App offers employees a simple, fast, and paperless way to access their EPF services. The app provides a user-friendly platform to create and manage a UAN without visiting offices. This digital approach enhances transparency, saves time, and ensures employees can easily track their PF accounts, promoting convenience and financial empowerment.
