Non-profit non-governmental organizations can operate in India as NGOs, section 8 companies, charity trusts, and cooperative societies. The general purpose of setting up a non-profit organization is to promote charitable activities related to education, art, religion, culture, sports, and social welfare. It is not mandatory for such organizations to get registered before commencing operations. However, it is always advisable that they get registered to avail of tax exemptions and other kinds of benefits meant for non-profit entities.
