GST Portal & Its Services

GST portal is a platform introduced by the Indian Government to compile all online services related to GST at one place for the convenience of taxpayers. Such a compilation helps taxpayers get quick and easy access to these services, saving their time and effort spent on navigating through multiple websites otherwise.
In order to really appreciate the importance of the GST Portal, you should be aware of the services it offers. The GST portal offers end-end services of GST compliance for businesses, including services related to GST registration, GST Payment, Refunds, e-way bill generation and tracking the statuses of GST Applications. Let’s understand what each of these services offer.

GST Registration

If you’re a new user not yet registered under GST, you can do so through the GST Portal.  The process is entirely online. You can also track the status of your application on the portal by submitting the Application Reference Number or ARN generated at the end of the application process. Further, if any clarifications are sought by the department, you can also file replies to them on the portal itself.  Read our dedicated page on GST Registration for more information.

GST Payments

Once you are registered for GST, you can start paying the taxes applicable to your business. For this, you can create the payment challan and pay the applicable tax on the portal itself. You can also track the status of your payment on the portal and raise any grievances you have regarding the payment through form GST PMT-07, also available on the portal for your convenience.

E-Way Bills

E-way bills are generated to track the status of goods in transit. A GST registered taxpayer involved in interstate transportation of goods valued over Rs.50,000 needs to generate e-way bills for this purpose. Such bills can be generated on the GST Portal itself. The portal also provides complete information about the e-way bill system and mentions a helpline number through which you can resolve all your further queries.

Refunds and Tracking Application Status

GST Portal allows you to track the status of GST applications related to Registration and Refunds. You simply need to submit the ARN or Application Reference Number for this purpose. Application Reference Number or ARN is the number generated after you complete filling the registration and refund application to the Department.

Challenges & Concerns When Logging into the GST Portal:

While the GST Portal brings a lot of convenience to the table, like any digital platform, it can sometimes present a few challenges and concerns. Let’s explore some common issues you might encounter when logging into the GST Portal and how to tackle them:
  1. Forgotten Password or User ID: It’s easy to forget login details, especially if you’re juggling multiple accounts. If you find yourself locked out due to a forgotten password or User ID, don’t worry. On the login page, you’ll usually find options to reset your password or retrieve your User ID. Follow the instructions, and you’ll be back on track in no time.
  2. Technical Glitches: Technology can be finicky at times, and you might face technical glitches when trying to access the GST Portal. Slow loading, error messages, or pages not responding are common issues. Before you hit the panic button, try refreshing the page, clearing your browser cache, or accessing the portal during off-peak hours. If the problem persists, reaching out to the GST helpdesk or technical support can provide a solution.
  3. Browser Compatibility: The GST Portal may work optimally on certain web browsers while displaying issues on others. Ensure you’re using a compatible and updated browser for a smooth experience. Popular browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge often provide better compatibility with government portals.
  4. Security Concerns: Since the GST Portal involves sensitive financial and business information, security is a top concern. Always ensure that you’re accessing the official GST Portal website and not falling for phishing scams. Look for the “https://” in the URL and verify the SSL certificate to ensure a secure connection. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks and keep your login credentials confidential.
  5. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): While 2FA adds an extra layer of security, it can also pose a challenge if you’re unable to receive the verification code promptly. Make sure your registered mobile number and email address are up to date. If you face issues receiving the code, contact the GST helpdesk to resolve the matter.
