Food License is a permission granted by the FSSAI to carry on the food business. This food License is location specific and is also term bound. It carries a 14-digit registration number. Licensing/ Registration of food business is mandatory in India. The provision for this has been made in Food Safety and Standards Act,2006, which extends to the whole of India. It is an Act to consolidate the laws relating to food ,which establishes the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
License / registration with FSSAI is mandatory for every Food Business Operator (FBO). Whether a FBO requires a License or registration depends upon the factors like capacity of production/ handling etc. , nature of food business activities and area of operation. Before making an application to the authority FBO must undergo the eligibility search to understand whether it needs registration or license (State License/Central License)
Every person who is an importer has to apply for a central license at their address which has been registered with DGFT while obtaining Import Export Code. Ans: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a regulatory authority established under Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 for laying down scientific standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
Ans:License is divided in two categories:
Whether a FBO needs to apply for Central Or State License will depend on the nature of business, its turnover and area of operation. If FBO is operating in more than one state one additional central License is required at registered office.
Importers are required to have a single central License at their IE code addresses.
Ans: It may require 30- 60 days from the date of making an application with FSSAI to obtain a food license.
Ans: Yes, the License fee is charged on annual basis. An applicant may make an application for a period ranging from 1-5 years. The fee for State License is ₹ 2,000/- p.a. whereas the fee for an application of central License is ₹ 7,500/-p.a.
Ans: The License is valid for the period it is issued unless it is cancelled by the FSSAI. An application for renewal must be made before the expiry of the License. It can be renewed for a maximum period of five years.
Ans: Can an FBO carry on different activity at same premises under one License? The license is location specific. So, a single premise with multiple businesses interrelated to each other is eligible for one License/registration only. So in the same premises, if activities are carried on for processing of meat, milk & fruits & vegetables, there will be a separate license as these will be done in separate portions & businesses are not connected. However, in case there is fruit & vegetable processing & godown/ store along with it, since these are connected activities, one license is applicable.
